Roofing Safety: Stay on the Ground

You may never actually go up onto your roof. If that’s the case, then this post may not be relevant to you. However, roofing safety means staying in the know about the best – and worst – practices, so make sure that you’re not doing any of the following up on your roof at any point.

The Best Practices for Real Roofing Safety

“In some cases, homeowners engage in projects that damage the roof and cause leaks and a buildup of debris.” In other cases, it’s what you don’t do that makes a difference. For example, you don’t want mold or mildew growing up on your roof. It doesn’t just look back: it can eat away at the surface and make everything less structurally-sound.  If you have it removed, though, don’t use a pressure washer. The chemicals associated with this cleaning process can age your roof prematurely.

Part of good roofing safety practices is to never walk around on your roof. Even if it isn’t steep, the surface may not be strong enough to support your weight. Also, “each time you step on asphalt shingles, you risk dislodging them and causing leaks.” You would be doing damage to the roof itself while putting yourself at risk. There’s really no reason for you to be up here at any point.

This is why you call a roofing expert for any jobs that need to be done. For example, don’t try and take on patching a leak on your own. Aside from the reason above – the danger of going up onto the roof – you may not perform the job correctly, making it more damaging an expensive in the long run. That way, when you have to call a pro to do repairs, they’ll have more work to do.

Roofing contractors are committed to safety, which is why there is so much training and licensing associated with the job. Don’t risk your own well-being to try and save a few bucks!
