Roofing Scam Warnings and Defenses

Unfortunately, there are a number of roofing contractors out there who are not going to do honest work for you or your home.  There are a handful of tactics that they may use to accomplish this, and though you may have been careful in doing research to hire the best and most reliable contractor, you may still end up as the victim of a roofing scam.

How to Avoid a Roofing Scam

Because we at Cox Roofing are invested in your well-being, we want to make sure you’re hiring the best contractor you can, even if you choose not to work with us.  As a result, we’ve compiled the following warning signs that there may be a roofing scam headed your way… and how to avoid falling into one.

One such roofing scam is when a company claims to use one type of roofing material to cover your roof, but when they actually do the work, the cover is actually of a much lower quality with decreased value, protection, and durability.  You don’t want a cheaper product once you’ve asked for and paid for the more expensive version, and most importantly, you want to know that the cover over your head is secure.  To keep this from happening, be explicit about the materials that you want used, and if they are somehow not available, get it in writing that the workers will use a similar (in all respects) material without tacking on additional fees.

Don’t invest, either, in a roofing company that seems brand new.  Check online and perhaps even with neighbors, friends, or family to see which companies have been around your area for a long time, who have established reputations and many completed jobs.  This way, you’ll likely know the pros and cons of using that company ahead of time and you’ll know that they aren’t likely to vanish before finishing the job, at least.

In the name of time and money, a subpar contractor may “cut corners.”  This roofing scam is likely to diminish the quality and safety of your roof as a result of less materials used or precautions taken.  If you’re lucky and know someone with some roofing knowledge, or have some experience, yourself, check throughout the process to make sure this isn’t happening.

Also, take care that the contractor isn’t overcharging you unnecessarily by asking around for comparable prices for the work that’s being done.  They would likely not tell you about the price hike if they were trying to get away with a roofing scam.

Make sure that you do all the research you can before hiring a roofing contractor.  To bring on a reputable, honest company with over thirty years of experience get in touch with Cox Roofing today.
