Roof Remodeling 101 - Cox Roofing

Roof Remodeling Ins and Outs

Where do you begin with a roof remodeling?  How do you know if and when you need one?  Once that’s determined, there are still a ton of questions that need to be answered before you come to a decision, so consider your options, do some research, and get in touch with the professionals before tackling any big roofing projects.

Ask the Right Questions When Roof Remodeling

There is a lot of variety in roofing, not only in how it looks or even functions, but how it’s installed and in its ability to keep your home safe.  There are also a lot of contractors out there, all of whom claim to be the best and not all of whom, logically, can be the best.  If you wait until you have leaking or other pressing issues to seek help, you may make more rash choices than  you would otherwise, such as ” evaluating and hiring a contractor without a personal interview, judging estimates on low price only, selecting products without comparison shopping, and not understanding reroofing basics.”  Therefore, take some time sooner rather than later and see if a roof replacement is the right move for you.

What goes into roof remodeling?  For starters, you need to know some details about your current roof, such as its dimension and type of materials.  Also, it’d be helpful to whoever takes on the job to know when it was installed and if (and when) any additional work has been done up there.  Assess your budget for this potential project, keeping in mind that “costs don’t always include the expense of removing the old roof or the labor involved in a professional installation.”

Do you have any idea what kind of material you’d like for the roof remodeling?  There is a variety, after all, each with its own benefits and drawbacks.  This may be dependent on other factors, like your budget and even the slope of the roof, so wait until after an initial assessment of its status before deciding on the material you’d like to try.

Though you’ll likely not be undertaking the project on your own, it’s helpful to know the ins and outs of roof remodeling so that you can ask questions of your contractor and understand their responses.  For example, “some local ordinances require permits be obtained prior to the start of roofing work in both new and some reroofing jobs,” so you’ll need to check up on this before a job gets underway.

After confirming that there doesn’t need to be a permit, or after obtaining said permit, there are still other queries that you can pose for your contractor. You may want to know what will happen to the current roof, since some types can be left under the new materials, and while this could be cheaper, it may not be wise.  After all, you would just be laying the new roof over aging and perhaps damaged roofing, which has the potential for problems down the road.  If the old layer is torn off, make sure it’s explicit in your contract who is responsible for removing the old layer and properly disposing of it.

It’s often noted that a roof needs to be able to “breathe,” or to have proper ventilation.  If not, there could be problems of condensation from the attic or ice dam issues in the winter.  Roof modeling is a process with a lot of moving parts, many of which should have an expert opinion to avoid serious concerns later.  For information about replacing your roof or addressing needs that have arisen from a past remodel, get in touch with Cox Roofing today.  Our experts can assess your needs and address possible concerns in no time at all.
